Dear Lord it is for grace alone
That I on Thee rely;
No source of good I dare to own
Will ever satisfy.
Now Moses did for Israel plead
Not once, or twice, but more;
My single plea would rise to Thee,
"For grace I do implore."
I would not Lord, for wisdom ask,
As Solomon did pray;
But grace to fit me for the task
Of living day by day.
"A double portion" was the cry
Elisha made one day;
My hungry soul can only sigh
For grace, lest I should stray.
"My eyes are filled with tears and grief,"
Lamented Jeremiah;
He cried for help and quick relief
But grace is my desire.
Reluctant Jonah cried "Repent!"
Against his own desire,
And mercy followed where he went,
Such grace do I require.
"For kinsmen here," wrote Paul, "I'll die
And wish myself accursed";
My ransomed soul says, "Lord may I
By grace be reimbursed."
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem"
O listen to the cry
"Dear Lord who longed to gather them,
Grant grace to such as I!"
