We may think we can be righteous before God by our own good works or through religious rituals.
We may also believe that we can suppress sin and evil by our own efforts, or through man made rules and regulations.
However, the author rejects all such claims and lays out the scriptures which state that we cannot acquire righteousness ourselves but that we can beGiven Righteousness.
God has given us this righteousness through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
However, conflict remains because within us there is the “new man” (received at salvation) as well as the “old man”. None-the-less, the author excels at bringing to light our new life in Christ and what it means to become “servants of righteousness”.
The Given Righteousness explains that God’s goal is not to deal with His redeemed from a distance. Through the working of the new man within us, which He gave us, we are enabled to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
