Collection: David Groves

David Groves was born in Harborne, Birmingham, in 1939. At an early age he was taken to the local Parish Church where he remained until, at the age of 18 when he started attending The Salvation Army.

On leaving School he served a six year apprenticeship as a Compositor in the printing trade. Working with the young people in his local Salvation Army Corps (Church). He was appointed as Young People's Sergeant Major (Sunday School Superintendent), the youngest in the country at that time. He entered the Salvation Army Training College in London in 1961 and served in various leadership positions across the country until retirement in 2005, having completed 44 years’ service.

He was then invited to join the Chaplaincy of Chelmsford Prison where he spent almost 8 years during which he organised all Sunday services over a two year period until the post of Head of Chaplaincy was eventually filled.

David has a large collection of 16 mm religious films which, at that time, were shown across Essex. However, he now enjoys retirement with his wife in Nottinghamshire.
