Christ in the Old Testament: His suffering and glory
An issue for many Christians concerns what our Lord said to the two on the Emmaus Road.
He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (Luke 24:25-27)
Where, in the Old Testament, do we read about the Messiah suffering and then entering His glory? That is an issue for many.
Sylvia Penny gave two studies based on the Suffering Servant of Isaiah. The first dealt with the first three Servant Songs of Isaiah 42,49 and 50, and the second with Isaiah 52:13-53:12. Her third study was centred around Jonah and what our Lord said in Matthew 12:39-40.
Michael Penny spoke first on John 3:14, where Christ is likened to the serpent which Moses put on a pole. In his second he took us to 2 Samuel 11 & 12, where the innocent child born to David and Bathsheba took the penalty for David’s sin: a perfect picture of Christ as ‘The’ Son of David suffering for the sins of others.
Graham Bishop gave a study on Christ as the perfect priest and sacrifice. The priests in the Old Testament had to repeat and repeat sacrifices for sins, whereas Christ offered the perfect sacrifice once and for all.
Neville Stephens opened with an extensive study showing that Christ, in one way or another, is symbolised in every book of the Old Testament. His second concentrated on the title “I AM” and in his third showed that the very name ‘Jesus’ is found frequently in the Old Testament, but it is simply hidden by translation. The Hebrew equivalent is Yeshua and, for example, in Isaiah 62:12 we read “See, your Saviour comes!” and the word translated ‘Saviour’ is Yeshua, Jesus.
