The role of a judge at that time was more than simply applying the Law of Moses. They were all called by God to do His will. He used their strengths and weaknesses to confound Israel's enemies, and to bring that nation back from apostasy to worshipping Him.
God used this diverse band of people to deliver Israel from invaders, to avenge wrongs done to His people, and to bring the nation to repent of their idolatry. And what a diverse band they were! The author does an excellent job in giving a clear and concise account of each of the Judges.
